Ashburton Junior School, Croydon was opened in July 1928. It was first known as 'Long Lane School', then 'The Ashburton Council School'. Originally the school was both a senior and primary school. It became a seperate Junior and Infants School in April 1950.
In September 2009 (subject to final consultation) the school will join with Ashburton Community School to become Oasis Academy Shirley Park.

Remember the Silver Jubilee procession in 1977, it was a huge celebration with us all taking part in Fancy Dress. I went as the Queen, naturally! Lots of lovely teachers included Mrs Bartley, Mrs Blanthorn (my favourite!), Mrs O'Callaghan (who brought me out of my 'shy' shell). We were all scared of Mr Luing and Mr Croft! Mrs Mac was the best dinner lady in the World.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they are changing the school and combining it with the Senior side. Will it ever be the same? So sad to hear the news, but I guess, sometimes, change is necessary. Time will tell.....
my two children john and sophie both attended ashburton infants and juniors schools . we always recieved a warm welcome from the staff and really missed the school when we left . mrs Hearne always kept an eye out for john for me as he was sometimes very ill , bless her .I would like to say a very big thank you to all the staff and also to the teaching assistants for all the encouragment you gave them both over the years . we wish all the staff well for the future. sharon, john ,sophie
ReplyDeleteI have only just left the school and one of my favourite memories was the Yr 6 production which is a tradition for every yr 6 to do. It was so much fun and everyone put hardwork into it. Performing it to an audience though was scary but fun!
ReplyDeleteThank you for making school fun Ashburton Junior School!

All my family including my mum, aunts, uncles, cousin's and sister attended Ashburton. I left there in 1975 but have fond memories of Mrs Ford (my first teacher) Mr Luing, Mr Lambert, Miss Tut, Mr Hook and last but not least my nemesis, Mr Dorey! I have seen the new look for the school and feel that the colour scheme is absolutley AWFUL!! Was there a deal on pink and purple paint!! Who in their right mind chose this scheme. I am so glad I was there when I was as I would hate to be there now. I feel sorry that the pupils who attend this school are having this inflicted on them. I would not be announcing to the world which school I was attending for fear of being bullied!!
ReplyDeletehey i went there!!! i am now in yr 9 at shs hehe had the best times :)

i remember the day i left in yr.6. i was so upset. i was even more upset when i was told at the end of my borthers' last year that it was going to change into oasis. they had a massive leaving party, with an inflatible obstacle course, and cake, and balloons- they spent all they money they had left, seeing as they were going to shut down anyway. also, for the end of year six trip, my brother went to disneyland paris for a day. each parent had to pay £50, but for them it was worth it. :)
ReplyDeleteI was at Ashburton Primary from 1973 to 1980. It was a wonderful experience, from my first year with Mrs Ford to my last year with Mr Gravitt. Mr Hook was awesome, Mrs Day was scarey and Mr Luing was an inspiring man. The Queens silver Jubilee was a momentos occassion, some of my most vivid memories are of dyeing fabric with red cabbage juice, makeing a rocking chair out of clothes pegs, times tables tests on a friday afternoon, (I dreaded tables tests) warm milk with pink straws, class assemblies, harvest festival, violin lessons, orchestra, school dinners, liver and bacon with mash potato and gypsy tart for pudding were my favourite, and Mr Luing teaching me the Fosby Flop...... 30 years later I am living on the other side of the world, still playing the violin and teaching other kids how to do the Fosby Flop. Thankyou Ashburton Primary for giving me the skills I still enjoy today.
ReplyDeleteI was a NZ Kid on a big 0E parents took us to live and work in England. In 1973/74 I attended Ashburton School with my sister the age gap between us is 11months and 11days and because our birthdays were Sept we nearly ended up in the same class we had a great time as kids in a English School I remember buying lunch for 12p and if we didnt like it we would scape the plate at the end of dinner session or go back for seconds if it was good. I had one day of snow in February we scaped up enough snow for a Snowman. I remember missing the Christmas party due to having the mumps. I also had an Australian teacher whos name escapes me but i made many friends and i still remember some of their names where are they now. Hi Tessa, Susan, James and Geoffrey and all those i went to school with. the play that year was Aladdin. Regards Danielle
